小過Xiao Guo.Small Exceeding.
Thunder moves above Mountain: energy rises from stillness, yet the figure’s weight remains in its small outer lines. Xiao Guo permits careful excess in minor matters—extra attention, humility and restraint—while warning against grand undertakings or upward overreach.
Exceed in care, not in ambition.
Xiao Guo describes a moment when a modest departure from the norm is appropriate. One may be more courteous, more frugal, more exact or more cautious than usual. These small excesses compensate for a sensitive situation.
The flying bird should descend rather than climb. The advice is practical: remain close to the ground, respect scale and solve the immediate problem. This is not the time to turn a necessary correction into a heroic campaign.
Thunder above. Mountain below.
Thunder moves outward while Mountain arrests movement. Four yielding lines surround two firm central lines, resembling a bird whose wings extend beyond its body.
Keep the correction small and the direction downward.
The governing proposition
Small Exceeding brings success; constancy is beneficial. Small affairs may be undertaken, not great affairs. The flying bird leaves its call: it is not fitting to go upward, but fitting to go downward. Great good fortune.
Exceed only as the time requires
The small exceeds and succeeds when correctness follows the time. Yielding lines hold the centre, favouring small affairs; the firm lines lack proper central position, so great affairs are unsuitable. Rising is contrary; descending accords with the situation.
Exceed in respect, grief and economy
Thunder above Mountain: Small Exceeding. In conduct the noble one exceeds in respect, in mourning exceeds in grief, and in expenditure exceeds in economy.
Six ways small correction succeeds—or becomes overreach.
The bird flies upwardMisfortune · Changes to 55 豐
Premature ascent magnifies a small problem. Stay close to the ground; there is no advantage in making the situation more visible or ambitious.
The flying bird meets misfortune; at that point nothing can be done.
Pass the grandfather; meet the grandmotherDo not reach for the ruler; meet the minister · No blame · Changes to 32 恆
Use the nearest legitimate level of relationship and authority. Modest access and correct rank accomplish the task without overstepping.
One does not reach the ruler because a minister must not exceed the proper distance.
If you do not exceed in defenceSomeone may follow and injure you · Misfortune · Changes to 16 豫
This is one place where extra caution is justified. Familiarity or confidence can leave a small opening through which real harm enters.
If someone follows and injures you, how severe the misfortune is.
Meet the situation without exceedingNo blame; going brings danger, so remain alert · Changes to 15 謙
Respond precisely and do not turn the response into a permanent posture. Continued advance would convert careful adaptation into rigid excess.
Meeting without exceeding reflects an unsuitable position; forward danger must be guarded against because it cannot continue.
Dense clouds without rainThe prince shoots and takes what is in the cave · Changes to 31 咸
Potential has gathered but cannot yet become a broad result. Do not chase the sky; retrieve the specific value hidden close at hand.
Dense clouds without rain indicate that the movement has already gone too high.
Failing to meet, it passes beyondThe flying bird is caught; misfortune and calamity · Changes to 56 旅
Excess has lost contact with the situation it was meant to serve. Ambition rises past the available landing place and turns error into disaster.
Failing to meet and passing beyond means the movement has become excessive.
Solve the immediate problem with unusually careful, proportionate action.
Work and leadership
Improve controls, documentation, quality checks and handoffs. Avoid announcing a transformation when the real need is a precise operational correction.
Relationships
Use extra courtesy and restraint in sensitive moments. Small acts of care matter, but dramatic gestures can overwhelm the scale of the issue.
Timing and decisions
Choose the lower, nearer and more reversible option. If the move requires status, spectacle or a large irreversible commitment, it is probably too high.
Xiao Guo is aligned when exceptional care remains proportionate to a small task.
